Swimming. An essential skill to learn as a child. Remember the nostalgia of swimming lessons? Learning to dip and dive through the water easily...

What we tend to forget about our experiences in the water when we're younger is just how physically charging swimming can be. So, if you're looking for some new workout ideas - swimming may just be a fabulous place to start!

Here to tell us a little more about the benefits of swimming workouts is Academy of Swimming’s owner and head coach Rod Skudar who has graciously allowed us to pick his brain for some insights…

What are the benefits of pool exercise?

Well, swimming is a healthy activity that everyone can do throughout life. The exercise has many physical and mental health benefits, providing a great workout for the whole body while building endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. It’s also a fun way to keep up fitness, as nearly all of your muscles are used during swimming.

Do you need any equipment?

It’s totally up to you. But we’d suggest the following:

  • A good pair of goggles (just make sure they fit your face correctly).
  • Fins – these will make exercise easier and can be used while kicking or swimming.
  • Pull buoy – this is a piece of equipment which can help you develop arm strength and technique.
  • And of course… a pair of bathers and a towel!

If you haven’t swam since school swimming days, what are your tips for getting back into the pool?

Just take it slow; rest at each end of the lap and try to complete a mixture of kicking and swimming.

How long do you need to swim to get a good workout?

This will depend on your current swimming level, but generally 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

How many times a week should you swim to see the benefits?

Again, this will depend on your current swimming level and fitness, but twice a week would see benefits over a few weeks.

How do you get started?

Visit your local council swimming pool, pay the causal entry fee and ask a friend to come along with you!
